On December 17, 2016, at The Forum in Inglewood, California, USA, WBO cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk made his American debut against South African contender Thabiso Mchunu in the first defense of his world title. Coming into the fight, Usyk was 10–0 (9 KOs), while Mchunu held a record of 17–2 (11 KOs). The opening rounds were tactical, with Mchunu’s awkward southpaw style making it difficult for Usyk to establish his rhythm. As the fight progressed, however, Usyk began to take control with his jab, footwork, and accurate combinations, steadily breaking his opponent down. Usyk scored the first knockdown in the sixth round and continued to dominate the action.
