Benavidez faced former IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux on May 21, 2022 for the vacant WBC interim super middleweight belt. Benavidez dominated the fight, dropping Lemieux hard in round 2 and scoring a stoppage in round 3 after a brutal assault.
