This match went down in the finals of the IBJJF Worlds Openclass in 2000 Rodrigo ‘Comprido’ Medeiros is a historical Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt under Romero Cavalcanti. This two time world champion in the open weight division was has a force to be reckoned with for over 10 years, even in the condition of semi-retired he managed to hold his own against some of the elite grapplers of the new generations. Later, as a coach in the USA, Comprido excelled as well training highly successful MMA fighters such as Dean Lister, Mike Russow and Brock Lesnar Fernando Pontes, mostly known as “Margarida” within the jiu-jitsu community, is a former open weight world champion in the sport. Margarida’s aggressive and entertaining style made him one of the most revered grapplers in the early 2000’s, he was also known for his irreverence in and outside of the mats. His high-class technical abilities and his personality made him one of the more recognizable sporting figures of his generation in Brazil. Margarida means “Daisy” in Portuguese. He received the nickname when he first started training at Fabio Gurgel and Fernando Yamasaki’s academy. During the Carnival season, Margarida asked his dentist to put the elastic bands on the braces in different colors (in theme with the festive season). When he showed up at the gym, Fabio Gurgel thought it was so funny he named him Daisy.
