Batting first on a cloudy morning, South Africa surprisingly chose to bat and were powered by a superb 70 off 73 balls from Daryll Cullinan, one of his finest innings of the tour. Mark Symcox provided explosive late support, smashing four sixes from just 39 balls after being dropped by Hollioake on three. England appeared to be cruising in the chase when Nick Knight and Graham Hick put together a 113-run partnership. But despite their strong start, England's batting once again collapsed badly as they fell short of the revised target. During the change of innings, England discovered that the complicated net run-rate calculations meant their "real" target was 198. With their place in the final already assured, England failed to maintain their early momentum and South Africa capitalised to claim a memorable 14-run victory.
