Onosato vs Aonishiki is the rivalry shaping modern sumo, and this video breaks down why. One is a towering Japanese yokozuna, the other a fast, clever Ukrainian ozeki who keeps finding new ways to win. Their clashes have already swung title races, and the stakes keep rising. We trace how Yokozuna Onosato of Nishonoseki stable rose to sumo’s top rank, and how Ozeki Aonishiki, born Danylo Yavhusyshyn, went from refugee to Ajigawa stable’s star and multiple Emperor’s Cup winner. We look at their head-to-head bouts, the injuries that hit both men, Aonishiki’s Nagoya Basho 2026 yusho, and what the Aki Basho 2026 changed in the makuuchi picture. Hoshoryu and Kirishima are part of the story too. With Kyushu Basho 2026 ahead, the question of the next yokozuna, and whether Ozumo could see its first European yokozuna, hangs over every bout. SumoSpirit covers grand sumo through the people and moments that define it, so you can follow each tournament knowing what is really at stake.
