Athletes can often struggle with lagging motivation before, during, and after a volleyball season. Dr. Lauren Walker, Manager of Athlete Development at USA Volleyball, provides athletes with an explanation of different types of motivation and factors that may influence motivation over time. Walker explains the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, how feelings of autonomy, competence, and relatedness impact motivation, and provides athletes with reflective questions to help them evaluate their own motivation. Thank you to Dr. Eric Martin (Boise State University) for providing source material. 00:00 - Why Your Motivation Fluctuates 00:42 - The Motivated vs. Unmotivated Player 02:21 - The Two Parts of Motivation 04:53 - Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation 08:11 - The 3 Basic Needs: Autonomy, Competence & Relatedness 10:07 - Practical Tips for Building Competence 12:34 - Strengthening Team Connection 14:46 - Final Takeaways on Motivation
