Shawn Michaels was the WWF’s most popular superstar during 1996. HBK had defeated Bret Hart at WrestleMania XII to become the WWF Champion and the company soon began revolving around Shawn Michaels. At the same time, over on WCW, the nWo had formed which led to many wrestling fans choosing World Championship Wrestling over the World Wrestling Federation. Shawn was the champion of a company that was quickly becoming the runner up, and HBK put a tremendous amount of pressure on himself during this time period. Shawn dropped the WWF title to Sycho Sid at the 1996 Survivor Series. The plan was for Shawn to win the title back in his hometown of San Antonio, TX at the 1997 Royal Rumble. At the pay per view, Shawn wasn’t 100%. The WWF claimed that HBK was sick but Shawn still worked the match and he still reclaimed the WWF Championship. Weeks later, Shawn decided to forfeit the title while claiming that he had “lost his smile”. Shawn Michaels losing his smile is something that has stuck with the Heartbreak Kid ever since February of 1997, and this is what we will look at in today’s video. 00:00 - Shawn’s 1996 Title Run comes to an end 03:01 - The 1997 Royal Rumble 06:15 - Raw in the Skydome 09:06 - Shawn losing his smile on Raw 13:40 - Superstars react to Shawn forfeiting the title 16:53 - Bret Hart’s WrestleMania 13 plans 18:45 - The aftermath of Shawn’s forfeit #WWE #Documentary #Wrestling
